The Basic concepts of Feldenkrais therapy
Feldenkrais therapy, more correctly referred to as Feldenkrais movement education, was developed Dr Moshe Feldenkrais by incorporating his different backgrounds as a physicist, mechanical engineer and judo expert. Because of this, the method revolves around concepts and principles in biomechanics, physics and a deeper and more empirical context of human development.
Compared with the other methods especially with yoga, Feldenkrais therapy focuses on small, slow and gentle motions to better concentrate not on the movement itself but on the different sensations brought about by the actions. Aside from that, it also prioritizes the role of proper breathing in relation to the motions of your body.
The proper posture and accurate movements are based on the state of your mind and body. Whatever you are going through at the moment is reflected on the way you hold yourself and in the way you move. Thus, one of the basic principles that this method uses is the person’s self image as basis. The way you think, speak and move is based on how you see yourself. This could have been developed over the years and affected by the different experiences you had been through. To effect a change, it must be rooted on your perception of yourself.
It is anchored also in the idea that having better awareness of the different parts of the self in relation to the varied movements and functions of your body enhances self image. Increasing your range of motion as well as your fluidity and grace to promote ease of movement could enhance coordination and flexibility. This in turn will allow you to discover that efficient motion improves the functioning of not only your body but the other areas of your life as well.
The focus on the physical functioning does not end in itself. Rather, the wider understanding of the bodily functions is the introduction to an improved awareness of the interaction between the physical functions with life in general and the environment.
Some of the conditions that could be treated by this method include muscular and back pains, repetitive strain and multiple sclerosis. It is also good for individuals who are suffering from neuromuscular conditions like fibromyalgia and cerebral palsy. Dr Feldenkrais himself used this therapy for his sports injuries. Also of note, the practice of this method could boost the performance of athletes and dancers.
Of good news to some, this method is applicable to anyone despite age and health status. Feldenkrais therapy is all about reconciling our natural capacities for thinking, feeling and moving to aid our body find natural remedy and promote optimum health. By being aware of our unconscious habits which could be damaging to our health, we move towards controlling our pain and relaxing our minds.
In its entirety, the Feldenkrais therapy is about an alternative yet truly healthy and holistic form of exercise. As you explore the different possibilities of motions, you also move towards a delightful and life-affirming awareness of yourself and of the world. The method has the same concept as the effortless flowing action of water as it connects to the bigger environment of the ocean. It finds completeness and rejuvenation through the smooth flowing of movements to better connect with the wider universe.
